Appliqué and Piecing, A Marvelous Mix!

Quilts that combine appliqué and piecing are always among our very favorites. This lighthearted PowerPoint presentation explores the possibility of combining the two techniques to create a perfect pairing of wonderful mixed technique quilts

All Mary's appliqué workshops are taught using a video camera and digital projector. Real-time video projected demonstrations allow everyone in class to get a detailed look at each technique demonstrated. This great technology not only gives each participant a terrific view, but also allows more time for individual hands-on help.

Achieve great looking hand appliqué and actually enjoy doing it! Stitch a variety of needleturn techniques, including elegant thin stem, sharp points and "V’s", and perfect circles. This workshop is designed to improve the level of workmanship for students already hooked on appliqué, and to provide a solid basis for the beginning student who enjoys hand work. Of course you won’t complete the design in class, but you will leave class able to finish this project with confidence.

Baltimore Album quilts remain a source of inspiration for hand appliqué. Using an original basket pattern designed in the spirit of the classic quilts of the mid-1800's, explore advanced needleturn techniques common to Baltimore Album quilts. These include woven baskets, complex flowers, layering without bulk, small circles, challenging shapes, and reverse appliqué. If you love hand appliqué, this class just may tempt you to stitch your own heirloom Baltimore Tribute quilt. Students must have a comfortable knowledge of hand appliqué.

Explore the challenges that complex hand appliqué patterns present while stitching a graceful floral medallion. In this original pattern set on point, students will learn new techniques while weaving satin, grosgrain or moiré ribbon into a unique basket which holds cascades of branches and flowers. Particular emphasis will be placed on fabric selection and achieving both variety and balance while using a wide array of fabrics and prints. We will also concentrate on placement and layering of complex patterns and small shapes, as well as refining needleturn appliqué techniques. Nothing is more striking than hand appliqué done on a dark background. However, there are pitfalls and special considerations in planning and selecting fabrics for this unique look. Learn special techniques for transferring patterns to a dark background. We will work with color and fabric selection to achieve dramatic shading on darks. This workshop addresses the quiltmaker's most common lament, "How do I choose fabrics for my quilt?". A practical approach to the subject of color, students will apply basic color theory to printed fabrics and experiment with expanding their own palette and adding elements of interest and "sparkle" to their work. Taught in a discussion/paste-up exercise format, the workshop is designed to offer growth in both color theory and selection of prints, with an eye toward analyzing your personal "stash" of fabrics and building a dynamic fabric inventory. Students at all levels of quiltmaking find this workshop valuable as a motivator to stop agonizing over fabric selection, and start having fun with all the exciting and creative fabric choices available to today's quiltmaker!
